Custer County's History
When you choose the road to Custer County Colorado, you choose the road less traveled. The quaint shops that line our streets are a refreshing change from the mall. Meals at our restaurants are more about good food than they are about fast pace. There’s not a traffic light in the entire county. We don’t have traffic – unless you count antelope, deer and elk.

Custer County is hardly the sticks. Most people live here because they’ve chosen to, coming from busy lives in international cities to truly get back to what’s most important in life. Serenity. The beauty of nature untouched by billboards. Fresh air filled with the sweet scent of hay. Big sky adorned with more stars than you’ve ever seen. Ice cream cones and strolls down country lanes. Majestic mountains that seem to change their appearance daily. Hollywood discovered the charms of our valley and featured it in films including How the West was Won, Cat Ballou, The Cowboys, Comes a Horseman, the Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox and Continental Divide, among others.

With Pikes Peak to our northeast, the Royal Gorge and Monarch Ski  Resort to our northwest and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve to our southwest, Custer County is a great place for a vacation. You can stay in a B&B or a tent. Ride a horse or an ATV. Listen to great bluegrass or the wind whistling through the aspens. Eat rack of lamb or a hotdog roasted over a fire

So if you’re looking for the place without the big crowds, the place your well-traveled friends have yet to discover, take the road less traveled. Welcome to Custer County.
